When selecting a bonsai for indoor-only growth, it is essential to choose tropical or subtropical species.
Unlike temperate trees (like Junipers or Maples) which require a cold dormancy period outdoors to survive, tropical plants can thrive in the consistent warmth of a home.
Top Indoor Bonsai Species
For beginners, the Ficus and Jade are widely considered the most “immortal” and easiest to maintain in a living room environment.
Ficus: These are the most popular indoor bonsai because they are extremely resilient to low humidity and “forgiving” of watering mistakes.
The Brussel’s Golden Gate Ficus is a top-rated variety known for its attractive gray trunk and small, dark green leaves.

Dwarf Jade: Also known as Portulacaria afra, this is a succulent that stores water in its leaves, making it highly drought-tolerant.
It requires plenty of light (direct sunlight is best) but very little maintenance.

Hawaiian Umbrella (Schefflera): This species is very tolerant of low light and low humidity, making it ideal for offices or homes with fewer windows.

Flowering & Exotic Options
Fukien Tea: Also called Carmona, this is known for its tiny white flowers that can bloom year-round and its shiny, waxy leaves.
It is more sensitive to temperature changes and requires constant moisture.

Azalea: Part of the Rhododendron genus, these produce stunning spring blooms.
The Azalea Pink Blossom bonsai is a beautiful choice, though Azaleas generally prefer slightly cooler indoor spots and specific acidic soil.

Ginseng Ficus: Recognized by its thick, “pot-bellied” trunk and exposed roots.
The Arcadia Garden Live indoor bonsai is a low-maintenance version of this exotic-looking tree.

Essential Indoor Care Tips
Light: Most indoor bonsai need bright, indirect light. A south-facing window is ideal. If your space is dark, you may need a LED grow light for about 10 hours a day.
Humidity: Indoor air is often too dry. Place your tree on a humidity tray (a tray with pebbles and water) to increase the moisture in the air around the leaves.
Watering: Never water on a set schedule. Instead, feel the soil; water thoroughly when the top inch feels slightly dry.
Temperature: Keep consistent โ ideally between 60โ75ยฐF (15โ24ยฐC). Avoid drafts from AC/heaters.
Our Recommendation
If this is your first bonsai, we highly recommend a Ficus. It is the most durable species and will adapt most easily to standard home environments.
Our group will be ordering a tiny leaf variety from the nursery if youโre interested!
